OUR DIRECTOR, MAJOR & PLANNED GIFTS
The Director of Major and Planned Gifts is primarily a front-line major gift officer charged with cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of 150-200 prospects (individuals, corporations, and foundations) with the objective of maximizing their leadership and philanthropic engagement. Accordingly, the Director will develop and conduct strategies to raise major gifts, planned gifts, and government grants for Charles E. Smith Life Communitie , as well as identify and cultivate leaders.
n addition to direct fundraising work, the Director of Major and Planned Gifts provides support to the Vice President on the assessment of overall prospect management and major gift efforts, constructing and providing regular reports; assessing prospect pools, assignments, and ratings; setting departmental goals; developing and tracking major and planned gift opportunities; reviewing gift acceptance policies and gift agreements; and, leveraging other programs/resources to engage potential major donors.
The Director will implement short- and long-term planned giving goals and strategies to build upon existing commitments and expand the current donor base. They will provide expertise in structuring complex gifts and collaborating with colleagues to close new planned gift intentions and manage multichannel marketing and communications efforts to promote planned giving to prospective donors and help build a robust pipeline of donors and prospects. The Director will oversee effective handling and processing of estate gift administration to ensure appropriate stewardship and closure of realized gifts and respond to donor inquiries with appropriate information on bequests, life income gifts and other gift planning vehicles. Further, the Director will cultivate relationships with attorneys, trust officers, accountants, financial planners, and other estate planning professionals regarding gift opportunities for clients and provide material for their use, exchange up-to-date information on current best practices, request help in obtaining referrals and discuss donor interests
Essential job responsibilities:
- Raises major and planned gifts and government grants: identification, cultivation, solicitation, and follow-up. Activity includes personal meetings, correspondence, and 2 proposal development and presentation. Involves engaging senior managers, unit heads, major donors, and senior volunteer leaders as partners. Meets annual targets.
- Work with the Director of Special Events (Community Engagement) as needed, providing support to events involving major donors, conceptualizing and overseeing other major donor stewardship and cultivation events.
- Develop specific calendar year strategy to enhance planned giving effort, month-bymonth, in conjunction with VP. Support the overall major gift and planned giving effort with regular analysis, reporting, and evaluation of department activity; guide and support the development of gift opportunities and gift policies and agreements. Supports VP in managing Resource Development committee of the Board.
- Participate in identification, cultivation, and stewardship of annual Guardian campaign donors in major gift portfolio. Support the VP and the Annual Giving Officer’s work on the annual Guardian campaign.
- Oversee and improve endowed fund reporting and reporting on foundation and government grants. Manage stewardship and recognition of major and planned gift donors

LOCATION
This position is based in the Development Department in the Dekelboum Building, located at 6101 Montrose Road in Rockville, Maryland.
SHIFTS & STATUS
This is a Full Time, Exempt position
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in development with emphasis on the cultivation of individual donor relationships
- Demonstrated experience securing major gifts of $10,000 or more for special or restricted purposes
- Demonstrated experience cultivating, soliciting, and closing planned gifts
- Exceptional demonstrated written and oral communication skills in the English language
- Excellent customer service orientation and diligence.
- Temperament suitable to working in what can be a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
- Exceptional recognition of ethical and legal requirements of confidentiality in handling of sensitive information and situations
- Fluency in Office products: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated familiarity with: Greater Washington philanthropy, Jewish organizations, seniors, healthcare, long-term care, public relations, or social service
- Fluency with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge
